Careers

You know what the report should do. Build it.

CA(SA) developers based in Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa, building the software finance teams run on. If you are a chartered accountant who writes software, or one who wants to learn, this is the job. In the office five days a week: table tennis, golf, and socials that sometimes get out of hand.

Based in Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa.

The work

What you would actually do.

You sit with a finance team, find what is actually breaking, and build the fix. You write the code, review somebody else's, and take the decision to the CFO in their own language.

  • The problem, not a ticket

Nobody hands you a specification written by somebody who has never closed a set of books. You find the problem, scope it, build it, and answer for whether it worked.

  • Built to be handed over

Everything is delivered in the client's own environment, under a perpetual licence to the source code. What you write is read by people who did not write it, which is the best discipline there is.

  • An agent workforce beside you

You build with AI coworkers every day: you work with them to produce each output together.

  • Both hats, permanently

You keep the CA(SA) side, controls and disclosure and what the auditors will ask for, and you keep writing software. Neither one is the hobby.

Who we look for

Qualities, not years.

We do not screen on years served or on a list of frameworks; those go out of date while you read them. This is the short list of things that are hard to teach.

  • You finish things.

Something you built is in use by people who did not build it. What it is matters less than the fact that it shipped.

  • You are precise.

Nearly right is wrong, in a trial balance and in a query. You already work that way; the code has to as well.

  • You explain well.

You can take a technical decision to a finance audience without talking down to them or hiding behind the jargon.

  • You pick up tools quickly.

You would rather learn the right tool than defend the one you already know. The agents count as a tool.

  • You say what you do not know.

The quickest way to lose a finance team is to guess in front of them.

  • You would rather build the tool than wait for it.

That sentence is most of the job description.

Either you are a chartered accountant who already writes software, or you are on your way to becoming one. Both routes are open, and they start in different places.

The debit-and-credit jokes land here. Take that as a feature or as a warning.

Newly qualified

The CA(SA) Developer Programme.

If you are a newly qualified CA(SA), or eligible to register as one, and would rather build the tools than wait for them, the CA(SA) Developer Programme teaches you to ship real software alongside experienced CA(SA) developers. Applications are open all year.

Tell us what you have built.

There is no job board here and no applicant portal. Send us a note with something you have made, a system or a model or a tool your team still uses, and what you would want to build next. A person reads it, and a person replies.
